Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East Operation Hadin Kai, have rescued 74 stranded National Youth Service Corps members from a possible abduction by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists along the Buratai–Kamuya Road in Borno State. The Media Information Officer of the Task Force, Sani Uba, confirmed the rescue in a statement released on Thursday. “The corps members, 36 males and 38 females, were rescued at about 9:05 pm on Tuesday after their vehicles broke down near a known kidnapping hotspot,” Uba said. He explained that a military patrol team was quickly deployed after a closed-circuit television system monitored by troops detected suspicious movement involving three buses at the location. “On arrival, troops discovered 74 NYSC members stranded after their vehicles developed mechanical faults. “The troops immediately rescued them to prevent a likely abduction attempt by Boko Haram or ISWAP elements operating in the area,” the statement added. Uba said the rescued NYSC members are currently being accommodated at the Buratai military base pending further arrangements for their safe movement. PUNCH Online reports that the successful operation came a few days after the Task Force rescued 86 kidnapped victims and arrested 29 suspected terrorist logistics suppliers during coordinated operations in Borno State. In a statement shared on X on Monday, Uba said troops of the 135 Special Forces Battalion under Sector 2 OPHK encountered Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists on November 9 at Dutse Kura after discovering that the insurgents were abducting civilians and vehicles along the Buratai–Kamuya Road. He said, “The troops thwarted the attack and pursued the terrorists towards Mangari, overpowering them in a follow-up encounter near a camp, which forced the insurgents to flee in disarray. “A search of the area led to the destruction of 11 makeshift terrorists’ structures and the rescue of 86 kidnapped victims, including men, women, and children. “Recovered items include one AK-47 rifle, five magazines containing 73 rounds, four PKT ammunition belts, five civilian vehicles, five motorcycles, eight bicycles, and two logistics tricycles.
