Anxiety grips Delta community as cholera epidemic claims 3, many hospitalized
** Cry for Oborevwori’s swift intervention
Bulu-Ndoro community, Burutu Council Area of Delta, has been gripped in anxiety as the cholera epidemic claimed 3 lives, leaving many indigenes in life-threatening conditions at a neighboring State hospital in Bayelsa State.
Deacon Arede Edeinmene, an Executive Assistant on Political Matters to Governor Sherrif Oborevwori of Delta State, speaking to Journalists in Warri, appealed to the Governor for swift intervention to save the lives of the people of the Bulu-Ndoro community.
He lamented that the spread of the epidemic had almost affected every household at the moment,, including children, women, youth,s, and the elderly. Edeinmene said more worrisome was that the people in the community had no choice but to rink and use the contaminated river water as their main source of domestic water.
Edeinme, one who is one of the opinion leaders in the Bulu-Ndoro community ty noted cholera cases had overwhelmed the existing health center, saying the Healthcare personnel and the Healthcare facilities have been overstretched.
While calling for more medical manpower, supply of drugs, and hospital equipment to supplement the only existing Health center in the community, he expressed concern that the deceased victims of the cholera outbreak were the breadwinners of their families.
Speaking further, he decried the absence of pipe-borne water in the community as his people were apprehensive about using the water from the Bulu-Ndoro River, which is their main source of domestic water and means of livelihood.
According to him, the State’s timely intervention to complement the efforts of the Burutu Local Government Council was key to saving the lives of the people. He said some families have fled the community over fear of contracting the epidemic.
Edeinmene further charged Governor Oborevwori to upgrade the existing Health center to a comprehensive Healthcare facility to accommodate a resident doctor with a functional water system and electricity.
The Oborevwori aide explained that many cholera cases were evacuated from the Bulu-Ndoro community to a neighboring Toru-Ndoro Community in Bayelsa State to save their lives.
