
A deadly clash between operatives of the Benue State Police Command and a notorious bandit group has left a police inspector dead and twelve bandits neutralized.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when officers of the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force were ambushed while en route to a suspected criminal hideout in Agwabi, Tombo Ward, Buruku Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Benue Police Command, Catherine Anene, stated that the operatives had received intelligence on the whereabouts of the criminal gang and were moving to apprehend them when they were suddenly attacked.
Fierce Gun Battle Ensues
“At about 02:00 AM on March 19, 2025, while our operatives were heading to a criminal hideout, they were ambushed by the bandits, leading to a fierce gunfight,” Anene revealed.
The police engaged the criminals in a gun duel and successfully neutralized twelve of them, while others managed to escape with injuries. However, during the shootout, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse sustained a serious gunshot wound.
Weapons and Charms Recovered
After overpowering the bandits, the police recovered several items, including:
– Three AK-47 rifles
– Six rounds of live ammunition
– Camouflage uniforms
– Assorted charms
Following the gun battle, injured bandits were taken to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead and their bodies deposited at the morgue.
Police Inspector Succumbs to Injuries
Unfortunately, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, who was gravely injured in the exchange, later succumbed to his wounds despite medical efforts to save him.
“Regrettably, one of our team members, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, sustained a gunshot injury and was confirmed dead by doctors. His remains have been deposited at the morgue,” Anene added.
The Benue State Police Command has vowed to intensify efforts to track down the fleeing criminals and ensure that criminal activities in the region are eradicated.
