The Federal Government has failed to honor its commitment to increase the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, leaving thousands of corps members disappointed and financially strained.
Despite previous assurances from the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, corps members were shocked to receive only N33,000 for February, sparking outrage and frustration across the country.
The controversy stems from President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a new national minimum wage of N70,000 in 2023, which many expected would extend to NYSC members. However, the administration has yet to implement the adjustment, leaving corps members struggling amid skyrocketing living costs.
Many affected corps members took to social media to vent their frustration.
> “They’ve given us 33k again! I’m tired of this selfish government!” one corps member lamented.
> Another wrote, “But why does the Nigerian government find it easy to inflict hardship on its citizens? NYSC is causing us excruciating pains! I spend over N100,000 every month— 33k can’t even cover my data or transportation. Is 77k really too much to ask?”
The NYSC Director-General had previously assured corps members in Katsina State that they would begin receiving **N77,000 from February.** However, with the latest payment, it’s clear that the promise has not been fulfilled.
As of press time, **neither the NYSC management nor the Federal Government** has provided any official explanation for the delay in implementing the allowance increase.
With inflation worsening and the cost of living skyrocketing, corps members are left wondering if the government will ever make good on its promise—or if they will continue to bear the brunt of broken commitments.
