In a decisive operation against the spread of illegal arms, operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a woman identified as Janet Dominic for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
According to a statement issued by the command, the arrest was carried out by officers of the X-Squad during a special anti-crime patrol on April 10, 2025. The operation took place at Iguezemwahu community along the Benin-Auchi Road in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area.
Spokesperson for the command, CSP Moses Yamu, confirmed that the 32-year-old suspect was apprehended at the scene, while a male accomplice fled upon sighting the approaching officers.
A thorough search led to the discovery of a hidden cache of weapons stashed beneath the seat of a motorcycle. Items recovered include two single-barrel guns, three pistols, seven live cartridges, a dagger, a trigger mechanism, and one Beretta magazine.
This arrest follows closely on the heels of a disturbing incident in which 16 individuals of Hausa origin were reportedly lynched by an angry mob after being caught with firearms and ammunition—an event that has heightened security concerns in the region.
The police command has reiterated its commitment to ridding the state of illegal arms and bringing perpetrators to justice.
