Sadly, things took an ugly turn for the former president of Peru, Ollanta Humala after the court found him guilty of money laundering, sentencing him to a 15-year jail term.
Reports revealed that Humala was found guilty of collecting funds that are dubbed illegal from a construction company in Brazil to run his 2006 and 2011 political campaigns.
Odebrecht, the name reported to be that of the company, has bankrolled Humala to that effect, enabling a smooth transition of illegal funds into his accounts.
Similarly, Humala’s wife and former first lady, Nadine Heredia, also received a 15-year jail term for the same money laundering offense for which Humala was convicted, as an accomplice.
Nadine Heredia and her husband, Ollanta Humala, co-founded the Peruvian Nationalist Party. Emerging reports from the Foreign Affairs Minister of Peru, however, disclosed that the Brazilian government granted asylum to Nadine Heredia, allowing her smooth travel with their son.
According to BBC, the prosecutor requested 20-year prison sentence for the former president and 26.5 years for Nadine Heredia.
The court however delivered its verdict on April 15 after a prolonged trial, with Nadine participating via video link while Ollanta Humala was physically present.
Throughout the proceedings, the couple maintained their innocence, denying any wrongdoing of any form as stated in the suit filed against them.
