The world woke up to the sad news of the solemn passing of Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
The Vatican confirmed the news of his passing to the public after the octogenarian spent his last weeks in the hospital battling for survival from an infection that degenerated into pneumonia affecting both lungs.
Pope Francis was reportedly said to have died on Easter Monday, the 21st of April 2025, at the age of 88.
Prior to his death, the pope had severe complications from double pneumonia (affecting both lungs). Pope Francis was hospitalized in February 2025 with bronchitis, where he showed subtle signs of remarkable improvement following several diagnoses and treatments. However, things took a hideous turn when his condition dramatically deteriorated to respiratory crises requiring ventilator support.
Until his death, the Pope’s life was a gift of servitude to God and the Roman Catholic Church. In 2013, he became the first Jesuit and Latin American Pope, pioneering social causes such as justice for the poor, environmental protection, and inclusivity within the Church.
The Pope passed away at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta at 7:35 a.m. on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.
