On Tuesday, the House of Representatives held a special plenary session to commemorate the 2025 Childrenโs Day, joining millions across Nigeria in celebrating the strength, potential, and spirit of Nigerian children.
Students from several schools including Innocent Achievers School (Nasarawa), Fama Islamic International School, and Phoebe Kiddies International School were present in the gallery to observe the session and received a warm welcome from lawmakers.
A notable moment during the proceedings was when the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, ceded his seat to Lawal Haruna Sani, a student of Government Secondary School, Kuje, who acted as โShadow Speakerโ in a ceremonial role. This marked the second time the Speaker has made such a gesture during the 10th Assembly.
โThis symbolic act reaffirms the Houseโs dedication to child inclusion and civic engagement,โ said House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., adding that the student, clearly thrilled, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity.
As part of the celebration, 50 senior secondary school students from both public and private schools were officially welcomed into the chamber to witness the proceedings and tour the National Assembly.
Their participation was made possible under Order Six, Rule 4(2) of the House Standing Orders, following a motion introduced by House Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere.
