Lionel Messi has rejoined the Argentina squad for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers after recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the Copa America final. He’ll captain the team in the upcoming matches against Venezuela on October 10 and Bolivia on October 15.
Messi’s return is a significant boost for Argentina, which currently tops the qualifying standings with 18 points. The 37-year-old playmaker had missed previous qualifiers against Chile and Colombia due to his injury but helped Argentina win a record-extending 16th Copa America title despite his absence.
Messi has been in excellent form for Inter Miami since returning from injury, scoring three goals and providing one assist in four appearances. His coach, Tata Martino, believes that playing more games will help Messi build fitness and rhythm ahead of the MLS Cup playoffs
