Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, the voice behind the classic hit song โGwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo,โ has passed away at the age of 95.
Mike Ejeagha reportedly died on Friday evening, June 6, 2025, at approximately 8 p.m. at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu, after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer, a condition he had been managing since 2006.
The legendary artiste was born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Enugu State, and was a figure to reckon with in Igbo music and folklore.
Posterity paid Ejeagha in folds after he became an internet sensation when content creator Brain Jotter in 2024 hopped on his “Gwo-Gwo-Gwo-Ngwo” track to produce a comic skit. Not long after, other content creators, including celebrities, joined the challenge, making it one of the most epic challenges on TikTok.
The trend, cum challenge, revived Ejeagha’s 1983 song โKa Esi Le Onye Isi Oche,โ featuring the catchy refrain โGwo Gwo Gwo Ngwoโ, endearing young millennials and Gen-Zs to the legendary track.
May his soul find eternal rest, and his family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable lost.
