Three policemen have been detained pursuant to the oeder of the Nigeria Police Force for extorting a civilian during a routine patrol in Anambra State.
In an official statement released on June 11, 2025 by the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Ikioye Orutugu noted that the disciplinary measure was undertaken as the officers involved ridiculed the pristine principles the force is known for.
According to the statement, which was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Commissioner directed the immediate detention of the officers over corruption allegations and ordered the commencement of internal disciplinary procedures against them.
While the identities of the inspectors remain undisclosed, the statement revealed that the incident involved an unauthorized stop-and-search operation during which the officers allegedly accessed the victim’s phone without permission and extorted money from him.
Incidents of police brutality and extortion have become increasingly common in Nigeria, with young men and tech gurus living in constant panic and fear as they travel interstate.
The act has eaten deeply into the dealings of security personnel on the highway, compelling one to think if extortion was part of the numerous services the body renders.
