It was judgement day for a church usher in Uyo, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson.
The court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to death by hanging or lethal injection for murder.
Nelson was said to have killed his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga, parcelled the corpse on her bed and escaped with the new android phone belonging to the deceased. He was later apprehended by security operatives while attending a programme in the church.
It was gathered the incident occurred about 7am on February 6, 2026, which was the convict’s birthday. He was said to have left his Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo residence for the deceased’s address at No. 102, Aka Road, opposite NEPA Line, Uyo, to use her phone purportedly to post his birthday pictures on social media.
However, Nelson ended up struggling with the lady over the phone, slammed her head against the wall and then strangled her to death.
Eyewitness said the convict carefully arranged the corpse of her lover on her bed and escaped with the deceased’s phone.
But luck ran out for Nelson on February 8, 2026. He was tracked to his church along Nsikak Eduok Avenue, Uyo while attending a night programme about 2am.
During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.
According to the presiding Judge, Justice Ekpo Ntekim, Nelson 33 was convicted and sentenced after he was found guilty on a two-count charge of murder and stealing.
“The punishment for stealing is subsumed under the sentence for murder,” the judge said.
