The Labour Party (LP) faction led by Julius Abure has adopted the party’s national youth leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
In a statement on Saturday, Obiora Ifoh, national publicity secretary of the LP faction, said Ahanotu polled 2,944,420 votes at a consensus primary of the party.
Ifoh said the result of the primary was announced by Ayodele Olorunfemi, deputy national chairman of the party, at a press conference in Abuja.
He said the party will field governorship candidates in 30 states, adding that a list of successful candidates for the senate, house of representatives and state houses of assembly has also been released.
He added that the full list is being collated and will be transmitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in line with the guidelines of the electoral body.
The party urged “the candidates to distinguish themselves from the current leaders who have chosen their pockets ahead of the general welfare of Nigerians”.
‘COLLECTIVE MANDATE TO UNITE LP’
In his acceptance speech, Ahanotu described his emergence as a demonstration of the confidence, unity and shared vision of the party.
“I do not see this consensus as a personal endorsement alone; I see it as a collective mandate to unite our party, inspire our nation, and offer Nigerians a credible alternative built on competence, integrity, and service,” he said.
“With this consensus comes an even greater responsibility, and I pledge never to take that trust for granted.”
He said the party was founded on the principle that Nigeria works best when it works for everyone.
“We must build a Nigeria where every child has access to quality education, where every family feels secure, where every worker earns a dignified living, and where every citizen has a fair opportunity to succeed regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, social status, or geographical location,” he said.
The youth leader said his government would be anchored on four pillars, including economic prosperity, quality education, security and justice, as well as national stability, power, infrastructure and industrial development.
“Our administration will pursue policies that stimulate production rather than consumption,” he said.
“We will invest significantly in education at all levels, improve school infrastructure, strengthen teacher training, modernise our curricula, and ensure that technology becomes a tool for learning, innovation, and economic advancement.
“We will aggressively pursue power sector reforms, decentralise electricity generation, encourage renewable energy investments, modernise transport infrastructure, and create the conditions necessary for industrial growth and economic competitiveness.”
Meanwhile, the Nenadi Usman-led faction of the party has announced Chibuzo Okereke, a governance expert and policy strategist, as its presidential candidate.
In January, INEC officially recognised the Usman-led LP following a federal high court ruling that affirmed her leadership.
