Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that increasingly powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems could eventually act against human interests if proper safeguards are not put in place.
In a nearly 6,000-word essay published on his blog, Gates said the world remains dangerously unprepared for the disruption AI could bring, particularly as the technology develops faster than expected.
He identified three major risks: widespread job losses, the growing potential for AI-enabled harm, and negative effects on human relationships and children’s development.
Gates said jobs in sales, customer support, software engineering and paralegal work could be among the first affected, while young people may face fewer entry-level opportunities as AI becomes more capable.
He also warned that AI could make fraud, disinformation, deepfakes, surveillance and cyberattacks easier to carry out, even for criminals with limited technical skills.
Most significantly, Gates cautioned that AI systems themselves could eventually behave in ways their creators did not intend.
«“As the models become more powerful, they could begin to act against our interests and we could lose control.”»
Despite his concerns, Gates stressed that AI could significantly improve people’s quality of life if its benefits are maximised while its dangers are properly managed.
He called for greater preparation and safeguards as the world enters an increasingly AI-driven era.
