The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have filed separate petitions challenging the re-election of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke in the August 15 governorship election.
The petitions were displayed on the notice board of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal secretariat in Osogbo on Monday, September 7, formally commencing the legal process over the election.
The development followed confirmation by the Secretary of the tribunal, Pefe Belemore, that petitions challenging the outcome of the election had been filed.
The APC’s petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/01/2026, was filed by the party’s governorship candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, against Adeleke, the Accord Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The PDP’s petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/02/2026, was filed by Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola against Adeleke, INEC and the Accord Party.
The display of the petitions is expected to pave the way for the service of court processes on the respondents and subsequent proceedings before the tribunal.
Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared the winner after securing 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji of the APC polled 444,815 votes.
The filing of the APC petition came days after Oyebamiji had said he accepted the outcome of the election and congratulated Adeleke.
In a statement issued on August 29, Oyebamiji said he accepted the result while expressing concern over violence recorded during the poll.
He, however, said his camp would continue to seek justice and fairness through lawful and constitutional means where there were legitimate concerns.
Adeleke had subsequently called on Oyebamiji and other candidates to put aside their differences and support his administration following his re-election.
The specific grounds on which the two parties are challenging the election outcome have not yet been publicly detailed.
