Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has called for stricter enforcement of Senate resolutions, insisting that government agencies must comply with lawful decisions of the legislature.
Kingibe made the call during plenary on Thursday while supporting a motion sponsored by Senator Abdul Ningi on the need for strict compliance with Senate resolutions.
She urged the Senate leadership and committee chairmen to exercise their constitutional powers to ensure that government agencies discharge their responsibilities in accordance with the law.
The senator also stressed that institutions that fail to comply with Senate resolutions should face appropriate consequences through established legal and constitutional procedures.
According to her, the responsibility of lawmakers extends beyond passing legislation and approving government budgets to ensuring that decisions made in the public interest are implemented.
“Our responsibility goes beyond passing laws and approving budgets. It includes ensuring that decisions taken in the interest of Nigerians are implemented and that the concerns of our communities receive the attention they deserve,” she said.
Kingibe maintained that effective governance requires accountability, responsiveness and respect for the rule of law.
She added that government institutions must take the concerns of citizens seriously and ensure that decisions intended to improve their welfare are translated into concrete action.
“The people deserve a government that listens, acts and delivers,” the senator said.
She reaffirmed her commitment to promoting accountability, strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring that the needs of Nigerians receive adequate attention.
The call comes amid broader debates about legislative oversight, institutional accountability and the enforcement of decisions made by the National Assembly.
