……Condemn Abduction Of Students
The Association Staff Union of Universities of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (ASUU-FUAM), now Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), has lamented the porous security situation at the varsity, which has occasion several kidnaps in the past.
ASUU-FUAM disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday and signed by its Chairperson, Comrade Paul Anyagh while reacting to the kidnap of three female students of the university on Tuesday night.
Describing the development as ‘one too many’, the ASUU chairperson, who was reacting to the abduction of three female students of the institution on Tuesday, pointed out that with the development, ASUU was not sure of the safety of their members on campus anymore.
Condemning the abduction of the students, the chairperson observed that in the past students have been kidnapped, adding that a member of the Union was also kidnapped at the staff quarters of the university.
The Union which made several appeals as measures to remedy the situation and restore confidence in the university community, argued that the immediate and safe return of the students that were kidnapped would bring about stability on campus and ensure smooth academic activities.
According to him, “The Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been greeted with yet another wave of insecurity following the kidnap of three students of the University on the evening of 25th February 2025.
“ASUU-FUAM condemns in strong terms this criminal act on innocent students of the University. With what has happened, the union is not sure that its members will be safe on campus given that this incident is one too many.
“In the past, a member of our union was kidnapped at the University staff quarters; although he was later released, it went to show the porous security nature of our campus.
“Also, we have had cases of kidnap of students in the past on our campus, and given this circumstance, the union is no longer sure of the security of her members for the discharge of their legitimate duties.”
He therefore stated “In light of the foregoing, we are making the following appeals to the University administration and all security agencies in the state:
The immediate and safe rescue of the three students who were kidnapped on Tuesday, 25th February 2025. This will ensure stability on campus for smooth academic activities.
“The improvement of the security architecture on campus to ensure a safe environment for teaching and learning. The union is standing in solidarity with our students and parents and does hope for the safe release of the abducted students soonest.
“Meanwhile members of our union are enjoined to be calm in these challenging times with the hope that the University administration is doing her very best to secure the campus for smooth academic activities”, Anyagh appealed. End.
