APC To Adopt Indirect Primary For Anambra Guber Election
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially decided that the party’s candidate for the upcoming Anambra governorship election will emerge through an indirect primary.
This was disclosed by the party’s National Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, following a recent meeting of the APC caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC).
“As a party committed to due process, the NWC has resolved that the mode of primaries for the Anambra governorship election will be indirect. This decision was reached after extensive consultations within the party’s leadership,” Basiru stated.
To ensure all stakeholders are carried along, the APC has scheduled a stakeholders’ meeting at the party’s national headquarters on Tuesday next week. The meeting will involve the state working committee, state caucus, and governorship aspirants.
Addressing speculation regarding the mode of primary for the Anambra 2025 governorship election, the NWC clarified that no decision had been made before now, despite some earlier advertisements suggesting that a direct primary had been adopted.
“The official resolution is that the primary will be conducted through the indirect mode. A formal correspondence will be sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and supplementary advertisements will be published to reflect this decision,” the National Secretary stated.
The party also addressed concerns regarding reports that some prominent figures were absent from the NEC meeting. Basiru clarified that some individuals who were not statutory members of NEC were mistakenly reported as absent.
“For the avoidance of doubt, some leaders, including former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, attended the caucus meeting but were not part of NEC. However, some media reports wrongly suggested that they were absent from the entire process.
“To promote inclusivity, the NEC has set up a committee to review the party’s constitution, particularly to accommodate certain political figures who are currently not statutory members of the committee,” he explained.
The APC NWC also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other party leaders for their commitment to strengthening internal democracy.
The committee further resolved to engage government appointees on the achievements of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“We have agreed to begin engagements with government officials immediately after Ramadan to review the progress and challenges in various ministries, departments, and agencies,” Basiru announced.
The party also reviewed its ongoing membership e-registration exercise, stating that consultants have been mobilized and the necessary infrastructure is being put in place to ensure a seamless and credible party register before the next general election.
“Our goal is to have a register with integrity that can also help us analyze our party’s demographic structure ahead of future elections,” Basiru added.
With this clarification, the APC moves forward with its preparations for the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election, emphasizing unity, transparency, and stakeholder inclusion.
