The Federal Government has announced a monthly cash relief programme of ₦50,000 for eligible vulnerable households across the country to cushion the effects of rising living costs.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
Doro said the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) was a presidential initiative designed to provide immediate financial assistance to millions of Nigerians facing economic hardship.
He explained that the intervention was introduced in response to rising global food inflation and the increasing cost of essential goods, which have continued to put pressure on household finances.
According to the minister, beneficiaries selected for the programme will receive ₦50,000 monthly to help meet their basic needs and reduce the burden of rising living expenses.
He added that the intervention would be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in the cost of living, with beneficiaries notified directly before any adjustments are made.
Doro said the ministry was collaborating with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure, timely and transparent disbursement of the funds.
He explained that selected beneficiaries would receive text messages from the providers seeking their consent before the money is transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.
The minister stressed that Nigerians were not required to submit applications, pay fees or register through agents to benefit from the programme.
He warned members of the public against fraudsters, urging them not to disclose their Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to anyone claiming to facilitate payment.
Doro advised anyone uncertain about messages relating to the intervention or approached by individuals demanding money to contact the NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
He described the intervention as complementary to existing Federal Government social protection and economic support programmes, noting that it was aimed at strengthening household resilience and promoting economic stability.
The minister added that the initiative aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the programme with transparency, accountability and dignity.
