In a historic move to modernize governance and enhance service delivery, the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has launched four cutting-edge e-governance platforms developed by the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company Plc (BDIC). The groundbreaking initiative, unveiled in Makurdi, also includes the training of 40,000 civil servants in digital tools and ICT skills, marking a significant step in the administration’s commitment to technological advancement and administrative efficiency.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Alia emphasized the transformative impact of these platforms, stating that they will revolutionize government operations, streamline administrative processes, and foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the state.
“The launch of these e-governance solutions represents a watershed moment in our drive to modernize governance. These platforms will not only improve service delivery and transparency but also empower our civil servants with the digital skills required to navigate the evolving technological landscape,” Governor Alia stated.
The newly introduced digital solutions include:
1. Benue State Government Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) – A platform designed to digitize record-keeping, ensuring seamless document management, faster decision-making, and enhanced transparency across government agencies.
2. Benue State Geographic Information System (BENGIS) Portal – A comprehensive digital solution for land management that eliminates bureaucratic bottlenecks and streamlines access to land title applications and processing.
3. Benue Youth Startup and Innovation Support Portal – A dedicated platform to nurture and support youth entrepreneurship, providing resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities to young innovators.
4. Office of the Benue State Head of Service Website – A centralized platform aimed at improving coordination, communication, and efficiency in the civil service.
Capacity Building for a Digital Future
A major highlight of the initiative is the extensive training program designed to equip 40,000 civil servants with essential digital skills. Governor Alia underscored the importance of this capacity-building effort, stating that it will prepare the state’s workforce for the demands of the digital age, ultimately improving efficiency and productivity within government operations.
“This capacity-building exercise will ensure that our workforce is well-versed in operating the Benue State Government Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) and other digital tools. By embracing technology, we are fostering a future-ready workforce capable of adapting to the rapidly evolving global landscape,” the governor added.
Strategic Partnerships for Digital Transformation
The success of the initiative has been made possible through strategic partnerships with key agencies, including the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), and Galaxy Backbone Ltd. These organizations have provided critical support in the development and implementation of the e-governance platforms, as well as the training of civil servants.
Hon. Terwase Gbande, Managing Director and CEO of BDIC, commended the governor’s unwavering support for digital transformation, highlighting the benefits of the newly launched platforms.
“With this development, government officials and citizens no longer need to travel to Makurdi or any government office to submit documents or process land titles. The Governor himself will no longer sign land titles manually—everything has been fully automated. Benue State is leading the charge in digital transformation within Nigeria’s civil service,” Gbande stated.
The launch event also featured remarks from DBI President, Engr. David Daser, and NDPC CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, both of whom pledged their commitment to supporting Benue State’s digital revolution through continued collaboration and training initiatives.
A Bold Step Towards E-Governance
With the introduction of these e-governance solutions, Benue State is setting a precedent for other states in Nigeria to follow. By leveraging technology to improve governance, enhance transparency, and empower civil servants, Governor Alia’s administration is paving the way for a more efficient and digitally-driven future.
This initiative not only signals a new era of governance in Benue State but also aligns with the broader vision of positioning Nigeria as a leader in digital transformation across Africa. As implementation progresses, citizens and businesses alike can expect improved access to government services, reduced bureaucracy, and increased opportunities for economic growth through digital innovation.
The launch of these platforms is just the beginning, as the government continues to explore further ways to integrate technology into governance for the benefit of all residents of Benue State.
