Bill to Remove Immunity for Vice President Governors and Deputy Governor Passes Second Reading
The House of Representatives on Wednesday advanced a bill through its second reading that proposes retaining immunity for the President while removing it for the Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors.
The bill, part of 42 pieces of legislation debated, was discussed during a plenary session overseen by Deputy Speaker, Mr. Benjamin Kalu. Sponsored by Solomon Bob, a lawmaker from Rivers State, the bill seeks to amend Section 308 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, aiming to prevent the abuse of power and promote transparency in governance.
Titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to modify the immunity granted to the President, remove the immunity for the Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies, to fight corruption, eliminate impunity, and improve accountability in public office, and for related matters,” the legislation intends to foster greater accountability and integrity in Nigeriaโs political landscape.
