Danbaba Suntai was once a powerful and influential man. A trained pharmacist, he rose through the ranks of Nigerian politics—serving as a Local Government Chairman, State Party Chairman, Commissioner, Secretary to the State Government, and ultimately, the Governor of Taraba State. He wielded immense power, controlled vast resources, and commanded the loyalty of political allies.
But in a tragic twist of fate, everything changed.
Driven by adventure and a desire to acquire a pilot’s license, he took to the skies in a private plane. That flight ended in disaster. The crash left him severely incapacitated, both physically and mentally. Once a man who made critical decisions for a state, he was now confined to a wheelchair, clutching a toy like a child. He struggled to recognize even his own wife and children. The allies who once surrounded him vanished. The political associates who once praised him were nowhere to be found.
The wealth he had accumulated became meaningless. He could no longer sign his checks, enjoy luxurious trips abroad, or wear his designer clothes. His influence faded into obscurity. In 2017, he passed away, leaving behind a sobering lesson for those in the corridors of power today.
Danbaba Suntai’s story is a wake-up call. Power is fleeting. Wealth is temporary. The pursuit of status and influence often ends in emptiness. In the end, all that remains is the reality of life itself.
Let those in positions of authority reflect: What truly matters when the power fades, and the crowd disappears?
