Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has decisively ordered the arrest of four individuals accused of their involvement in the appalling killing of seven suspected kidnappers in Uromi, situated in the Esan North East local government area of the state.
In addition to these arrests, the governor has mandated a rigorous investigation into the circumstances surrounding these killings. Reports confirm that around seven individuals suspected of kidnapping were ruthlessly set ablaze by a mob in Uromi.
Governor Okpebholo, speaking through the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Government House, Solomon Osaghale, has unequivocally condemned this barbaric act. He vowed that those responsible would face justice and endure the full repercussions of the law.
Describing the incident as shocking and utterly unacceptable, he stated that such actions would not be tolerated in Edo State. “I was in Uromi at the Governor’s direction to assess the destruction and ensure that thorough investigations are launched to deliver justice and prevent a recurrence.”
Osaghale revealed that investigations indicated the victims had boarded a commercial truck, which was halted by local security personnel. Upon searching the vehicle, weapons were discovered, leading to a violent mob attack from individuals nearby.
“Upon learning of this incident, His Excellency, Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, instructed me to immediately come here to understand the facts, as reports of this brutality are alarming to our Governor, whose objective is to advance a prosperous state free from such horrific acts.”
“I assure you that those engaged in this unprovoked attack will not evade punishment, as the Governor has directed the Commissioner of Police to initiate a comprehensive investigation without delay. As it stands, over four individuals have already been arrested in connection with this heinous incident.”
Governor Okpebholo emphasized that no one has the right to take another person’s life and expressed grave concern over the nature of these killings. He called for calm and assured the law-abiding residents of Uromi, especially the Hausa community, to resume their daily activities with confidence. He made it clear that members of the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies have been deployed to restore peace and order in the area promptly.
In a response that echoes the resolve of the community, the leader of the Hausa community in Uromi, Mallam Aliyu Haruna, thanked the governor for promptly deploying the CSO and additional security personnel. Haruna affirmed that their presence has been essential in stabilizing the situation and reassuring the Hausa community, which felt apprehensive following this unprecedented event.
“We express our gratitude to the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his swift and decisive action following this tragic incident. This is the first occurrence of such violence in Uromi, and it is shocking, given the hospitable relationship we have enjoyed with the people of Uromi.”
“For decades, we have coexisted peacefully with the local populace. Many of us, including myself, were born here, and our community has thrived in this area for over seventy years,” he concluded, reinforcing the call for unity and continued solidarity.
