The Russian Federation has pledged to strengthen military cooperation with Nigeria in its ongoing fight against terrorism, offering weapons, operational support, and strategic expertise to enhance the country’s counterinsurgency efforts.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by Lieutenant General Andrei Averianov, Representative of the President of Russia, to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
Lieutenant General Averianov reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to deepen its defence partnership with Nigeria, describing the West African nation as a major regional power and a critical partner in global security efforts.
“Russia is currently engaged in special operations against 39 adversary nations. Through these operations, we have developed new methods and strategies, which we are willing to share with Nigeria to strengthen its fight against terrorism,” Averianov stated.
In response, General Musa welcomed Russia’s offer, underscoring the urgent need to expand cooperation in key areas such as special operations training, intelligence sharing, and the maintenance of military equipment.
“We must enhance our capacity through expanded special operations training and the provision of necessary equipment, including special boats, fast attack craft, and amphibious warfare resources,” General Musa said.
The meeting marks a significant step towards closer military collaboration between Nigeria and Russia, as both nations seek to address emerging security threats through shared expertise and stronger partnerships.
