Pandemonium was averted shortly after the Nigerian Navy rescued 99 lives involved in a boat mishap along the Bukuma River axis in Rivers State.
The tragedy was said to have occurred near Tuma, approximately 300 meters from Naval Security Station NNS 35, en route to Akuku-Toru Local Government Area in the state.
Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, issued an official statement detailing the accident and the actions of the rescue team in saving 99 lives.
Commodore Cajethan Aniaku expressed gratitude for the swiftness and proactiveness of the naval operatives, noting that their actions prevented what could have been a major maritime tragedy in the state and, by extension, the country.
Speaking further, she mentioned that the mishap, which had taken place between a market boat and a barge along the Bukuma River axis in Rivers State, was salvaged as a result of the successful operation of the operatives.
He noted equally that the success was hinged on a well-coordinated search and rescue operation, which was immediately launched by personnel from NNS Pathfinder, with support from four additional naval gunboats.
As at the time of this report, all 99 passengers aboard the market boat were safely rescued.
The Commander reiterated the commitment and unwavering loyalty of the Nigerian Navy to maritime safety under the leadership of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
According to him, the Nigerian Navy’s allegiance towards vigilance, and proactivity into ensuring the safety of mariners and waterways security is firmly positioned.
