Simon Ekpa, who identifies himself as the Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed state of Biafra, appeared in court today in Finland as the country officially commenced his trial on terrorism-related charges.
The Finnish prosecution is seeking a six-year prison sentence for Ekpa, who stood trial at the Pรคijรคt-Hรคme District Court.
Authorities allege that he has been involved in a range of serious offenses, including incitement to violence and financing acts of terrorism.
Ekpa was arrested in November 2024 by Finnish law enforcement after a lengthy investigation. The charges stem from his alleged use of social media platforms to encourage violent actions and civil unrest, particularly in Nigeriaโs South-East region.
Finnish authorities equally claim that his online rhetoric and directives played a significant role in fueling instability tied to the Biafran separatist movement, which he actively champions.
The case has drawn considerable international attention, given its political sensitivities and the cross-border implications of Ekpaโs alleged actions.
