The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has warned that it will oppose the re-election campaign of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, if he fails to take decisive action against the ongoing killings in the state, particularly in Ikpakpara, Agu-Amed autonomous community in Eha Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.
The group strongly condemned recent violent attacks on farmers and residents of Agamede and Mgbuji autonomous communities in the same region, allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen.
In a statement released on Friday, MASSOB leader Uchenna Madu urged Governor Mbah to put the safety and security of residents above his political ambitions.
โWe demand justice and accountability. The protection of vulnerable communities and the safety of our people must be a priority,โ Madu declared.
MASSOB emphasized that the persistent attacks by herdsmen are indicative of the broader insecurity plaguing Nigeria, especially in rural farming communities.
The group advised that Governor Mbahโs pursuit of a second term should be hinged on his commitment to safeguarding the lives of residents in affected areas.
This warning follows a surge in violence across Enuguโs farming communities. Between 2021 and June 16, at least 163 people were reportedly killed in Eha-Amufu border communities near Benue State by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
In just the past two weeks, 16 more individuals were killed in renewed assaults on Mgbuji and Agu-Amed communities in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo LGA.
MASSOBโs ultimatum reflects growing concern over the deteriorating security situation in Enugu State and highlights the urgent need for stronger protective measures.
The groupโs threat to challenge Governor Mbahโs 2027 re-election campaign introduces a significant political dimension, underscoring the demand for accountability and effective governance.
The Enugu State government is being urged to take immediate and concrete action to address the escalating insecurity, particularly in rural areas, and to prioritize the protection of lives and property across the state.
