Once again, no Nigerian university has secured a spot among the top 1,000 institutions in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2026, released on Thursday, June 19.
Out of Nigeriaโs 297 universities, none made it to the top global tier. However, three institutions namely the University of Ibadan, the University of Lagos, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria were included in the overall rankings.
According to the report, UI and UNILAG were placed in the 1,001โ1,200 bracket for both the 2025 and 2026 editions, while ABU appeared for the first time in the 1,201โ1,400 band.
The QS rankings evaluate universities based on eight key indicators, including academic reputation, research performance, and international collaboration.
Nigerian universities continue to fall short in critical areas such as research output, global engagement, and graduate employability all of which significantly impact their global standing.
Despite their longstanding history and the large number of graduates they produce annually, Nigerian institutions still lag behind top global universities. Meanwhile, several other African countries have made noticeable progress in the rankings.
Egypt leads the continent with 20 universities featured in the 2026 edition, followed by South Africa with 11 and Tunisia with four. Ghana and Morocco each had two universities on the list, while Kenya, Libya, Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia each had one.
