African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to bring the pump price of petrol down to ₦600 per litre, saying he would withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s ticket and campaign for Tinubu if the target is achieved.
Amaechi made the declaration on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while questioning the Federal Government’s claims that its economic policies would reduce transportation costs and ease the burden of living on Nigerians.
The former Rivers State governor said the impact of the government’s economic measures should be measured by what Nigerians experience in their daily lives, particularly the cost of transportation and other essential goods and services.
He specifically questioned whether transport fares had actually fallen, citing the cost of travelling from Nyanya to Abuja as an example.
“Every day he repeats the same thing. He said by October 1, the price of transport would come down. Check the cost of transport from Nyanya to Abuja; has anything come down? Has anything changed?” Amaechi asked.
He then offered to personally verify the prevailing petrol price at a filling station, saying he would support Tinubu if petrol was selling for ₦600 per litre.
“If fuel has come down to ₦600 tomorrow, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” he said, challenging anyone who doubted him to accompany him with a camera to a filling station.
Amaechi went further, declaring that he would relinquish his position as Atiku’s running mate and campaign for Tinubu if petrol reached the stated price.
“If it comes down to N600, I, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will withdraw as the Vice Presidential candidate of Atiku and campaign for President Tinubu,” he said.
The statement comes as political parties and their candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with Amaechi currently on the ADC ticket alongside Atiku Abubakar.
