The demolition of structures around Mami Market in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, has left traders counting their losses and raised concerns over the fate of residents displaced by the exercise.
The demolition, carried out around the Nigerian Army’s 3 Battalion Barracks axis, reportedly affected shops, container kiosks, residential structures, shanties and other businesses along parts of the DSC Expressway and NPA Road.
The exercise has disrupted commercial activities in the affected areas, with traders facing the loss of business spaces and residents scrambling to secure alternative accommodation.
Military authorities reportedly cited security concerns and alleged encroachment on land around the barracks as reasons for the exercise, arguing that structures close to the military facility could pose security risks.
The demolition has, however, drawn attention to the humanitarian challenges facing those whose homes and businesses were affected, particularly families and small-scale traders who depend on daily earnings to meet their basic needs.
