The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has vowed to track down those responsible for an attack that killed one of its officers and left another seriously injured during a surveillance patrol in Niger State.
The attack occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis, where the officers attached to the Wawa Control Post were carrying out routine surveillance duties.
The Service identified the deceased officer as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I (ASI I) I.U. Babangida, while his colleague, Inspector A.K. Musa, sustained serious injuries but managed to escape from the scene.
Musa is currently receiving medical attention, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration Akinsola Akinlabi.
The NIS disclosed that Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, describing his death as a painful loss to the Service.
It also expressed condolences to his family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery. The Service assured both families of continued support and assistance.
On efforts to apprehend the attackers, the NIS said it was working closely with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the incident.
The Service condemned the attack and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders, insisting that the incident would not deter it from carrying out its statutory responsibilities.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains undeterred by this unfortunate incident and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders,” the statement said.
