Norway is mourning the death of King Harald V, who passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89.
The King had been experiencing serious health problems in recent weeks. He was hospitalized after suffering from hemolytic anemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them.
While receiving treatment, his condition became more complicated after doctors discovered that he had developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream. Such infections can become life-threatening, particularly in older adults, as they can trigger a widespread inflammatory response and place significant stress on vital organs.
The Norwegian Royal Palace had earlier reported that King Harald’s condition had deteriorated and described him as being in very serious condition. He was treated at Oslo University Hospital, where he later died.
King Harald had experienced several health challenges over the years, including previous infections and heart-related treatment. In 2024, he received a permanent pacemaker after being hospitalized with an infection and a low heart rate.
King Harald became Norway’s monarch in 1991 and remained on the throne until his death at the age of 89.
