OPay has threatened legal action against an X user, Hafserh, over a viral post claiming that the fintech company would suspend its services and advising customers to withdraw their funds.
The company issued the legal warning after the user shared a post on August 30 alleging that OPay would go on an indefinite break from September 1, 2026.
In a legal notice signed by its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, OPay accused the user of spreading false and malicious information capable of damaging its reputation and business operations.
The company demanded that the post be permanently deleted and that the user desist from further publishing the claim on X or any other platform.
OPay also demanded a clear retraction and an unreserved apology, warning that it would pursue all available legal remedies if the demands were not met.
The controversy followed the circulation of a purported notice on social media claiming that OPay would suspend transactions and account-related services from September 1.
The notice urged customers to withdraw their funds from the platform to avoid being affected by the alleged suspension.
However, OPay quickly debunked the claim, assuring customers that its operations remained normal and that it had no plans to shut down or suspend its services.
Hafserh subsequently apologised to OPay and acknowledged that the information she shared was false and misleading.
She said she had deleted the post and confirmed that OPay’s operations were normal, with no planned break or shutdown.
The X user explained that the claim had already been circulating on social media for several days before she reposted it.
The development underscores the potential legal and reputational consequences of spreading unverified claims about financial and fintech platforms, particularly information capable of triggering panic among customers.
