Popular social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil, widely known as Dan Shagamu, has been found dead at his residence in Gaida, Kano metropolis.
Khalil’s body was reportedly discovered in a pool of blood at his home, with Amnesty International condemning the killing and calling on the Nigerian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
The rights organisation described the incident as a brutal killing and urged authorities to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.
Amnesty International also expressed concern over reports of politically related threats and intimidation ahead of the forthcoming elections.
The organisation said outspoken critics should be accommodated and listened to in a democracy rather than subjected to violence.
Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has directed security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.
The governor described the incident as shocking and unacceptable, while ordering the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police to intensify efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death.
Yusuf also called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found to be involved.
The governor extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and associates, while urging residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
Dan Shagamu was known for his social media commentary on political, religious and community issues. His death has sparked calls for justice and increased protection for outspoken voices in the state.
