President Bola Tinubu’s 2026 Independence Day broadcast has sparked an unusual debate online after claims emerged that the presidential address may have been generated using artificial intelligence.
The controversy followed Tinubu’s televised address on October 1, in which he declared that Nigeria was moving beyond its period of difficult economic reforms and entering an era of prosperity.
During the broadcast, the President defended his administration’s decision to remove fuel subsidy, insisting that there would be no return to the policy. He also highlighted measures he said had strengthened the economy and promised greater prosperity for Nigerians.
The speech, which lasted nearly 20 minutes and was broadcast across major television stations, attracted reactions from opposition figures and members of the public.
A group on X, iOccupyNigeria, alleged that the broadcast had been created with AI, pointing to what it described as a lack of synchronisation between the President’s speech and his lip movements.
The allegation generated further discussion online, prompting an X user to ask Grok, the artificial-intelligence platform owned by Elon Musk’s xAI, whether the video appeared to be AI-generated.
Grok responded that there was no apparent evidence of AI generation. It said the footage appeared to be an authentic recording of Tinubu delivering his Independence Day address from Aso Villa.
According to Grok, the video matched the speech published by several Nigerian media organisations, carried official branding, showed natural movements and was posted through Tinubu’s verified account on the day of the address.
However, Grok also acknowledged that modern AI-generated videos can be extremely difficult to distinguish from authentic recordings through visual inspection alone, meaning its assessment should not be treated as conclusive forensic verification.
The controversy comes amid growing concerns globally over the ability of artificial intelligence to create realistic audio and video content, making verification increasingly important when questions arise over the authenticity of political broadcasts.
Tinubu’s Independence Day speech has also continued to generate political reactions, particularly over his assessment of the economy and the impact of his administration’s reforms on Nigerians.
