President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Nigerian Air Force to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the crash of an ATR-42 military aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The aircraft, identified as NAF931, was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13am on Monday.
The aircraft later crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, in the Ilaje Local Government Area of the state, with its wreckage subsequently located. Preliminary information indicated that 25 passengers and seven crew members were on board.
Tinubu expressed sadness over the incident and directed the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, to ensure that the cause of the crash was thoroughly investigated.
The President said the investigation was necessary to establish what led to the accident and prevent a recurrence.
“This is a painful moment for our Armed Forces and for the entire nation. Our Air Force personnel put their lives on the line every day to secure Nigeria. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” Tinubu said.
He commended the Nigerian Air Force for promptly activating search-and-rescue operations following the crash, while also praising first responders and the Ondo State Government for their response at the scene.
Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of those involved, the Chief of the Air Staff and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the affected officers and asked God to grant their families and the Air Force the strength to bear the loss.
The President also assured the Nigerian Air Force of his administration’s continued support in carrying out its responsibilities of protecting the nation.
