The Kano State Police Command has invited a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, for questioning over an alleged display of a firearm at a political gathering.
The development followed the circulation of a viral video in which Warkal was allegedly seen displaying what appeared to be a pump-action rifle during a political event.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Kano State, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.
According to the police, the video was discovered during routine cyber patrol and intelligence-led surveillance by the command.
The command said the alleged display of the firearm, if established, could constitute a violation of the Firearms Act and potentially create fear, intimidate members of the public and threaten public peace and security.
Following the development, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, directed Warkal to report to the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
The police said the politician was currently at the State Intelligence Department, where investigation into the matter was ongoing.
The Commissioner warned that the command would not tolerate lawlessness, political thuggery or the display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, regardless of the status of those involved.
The police also urged political actors, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.
The command stressed that political activities must promote peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
