President Bola Tinubu has charged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council to lead the party’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general election, saying he cannot attend every campaign event because of his responsibilities as president.
Tinubu made the remarks on Wednesday during the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, where he urged party members to take the administration’s message to Nigerians across the states, local government areas and wards.
The president said the demands of governance must not be neglected in the pursuit of electoral victory, noting that Nigeria required his attention amid pressing economic responsibilities.
“You’ve warned me not to allow the rigour of the campaign to distract me from governance, I hear you. I am in full agreement with your decision. Nigeria needs more attention now,” he said.
Explaining why he would not accompany the campaign team to every event, Tinubu pointed to the government’s financial obligations and the need to sustain economic engagement with international creditors.
“So, you will excuse me from going everywhere with you, we have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of attracting investors willing to commit to long-term investments in Nigeria, describing such investments as essential to securing a better future for the country’s children.
“We want those investors to come in, be here to stay, to invest for the future of our children,” the president added.
Tinubu, however, assured Nigerians that he would continue to communicate directly with them while the campaign council coordinated the party’s activities across the country.
“However, I will still make time to speak directly with Nigerians, even as you lead the campaign in the states and local government areas,” he said.
Describing the inauguration as more than a routine political exercise, the president said the event represented a renewed commitment to the Nigerian people and the responsibilities entrusted to the ruling party.
“We have not gathered merely to inaugurate a council. We have gathered to renew a covenant. A covenant with Nigerian people and the historic responsibility they have entrusted to us as Nigeria’s governing party,” he said.
He charged the council to communicate the administration’s vision, record and policy agenda to voters nationwide as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.
“This council will carry our vision, our records and our agenda to every Nigerian, and it will carry them to victory every ward of this country,” Tinubu said.
The president also commended APC members for completing the party’s congresses, recalling predictions that the internal process could trigger a major crisis within the party.
According to him, the party had overcome the challenges and remained united, crediting members for their participation from the ward level to the national leadership.
“They said there will be implosion. We passed through it. We did not fail. You didn’t let us down. We got here together,” he said.
