The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) may suspend the deployment of corps members to Cross River State for its forthcoming 2026 Batch C Stream II orientation exercise following concerns over the deteriorating condition of the state’s permanent orientation camp in Obubra.
The reported development followed an inspection of the camp by the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, during which concerns were reportedly raised about the state of facilities meant to accommodate corps members.
According to reports citing sources within the scheme, the proposed suspension would take effect after the ongoing Batch C Stream I orientation exercise, meaning that corps members scheduled for the next stream may not be posted to the state pending further notice. However, the alleged directive has not been independently confirmed by an official NYSC statement.
The condition of the Obubra camp has renewed concerns about the welfare of corps members undergoing the mandatory three-week orientation programme, which involves accommodation, physical training and other camp activities.
The camp has reportedly struggled with ageing infrastructure and inadequate facilities. A previous NYSC report also identified the need for additional hostel accommodation, toilet facilities, mattresses, repairs to bunk beds and improved electricity supply at the facility.
The reported development could affect prospective corps members awaiting deployment to Cross River State for the next orientation exercise, scheduled to commence on November 4, 2026.
Meanwhile, efforts to establish whether the NYSC has formally approved the suspension remain inconclusive, with no independently verified public announcement confirming that deployment to the state has been halted.
The Cross River State Government and the NYSC are yet to publicly confirm the reported decision in the sources reviewed.
