The immediate past Head of the Civil Service of Rivers State, Dr. George Nweke, has refuted claims made by his wife that he was kidnapped and forced to make a public statement.
In a video statement, Dr. Nweke confirmed that he is currently staying at Transcorp Hotel in Abuja and emphasized that he was neither abducted nor coerced. He explained that his visit to the capital was to report Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s alleged plans to the security agencies.
This comes after a press briefing where Dr. Nweke accused the embattled governor of certain destructive actions in the state. Shortly after his address, a video surfaced online in which his wife claimed he had been kidnapped and forced to make the statement under duress.
However, Dr. Nweke dismissed his wife’s claim, asserting that she had been misled.
“My name is George Nweke, and I’m currently in Transcorp Hotel, Abuja. I arrived here this morning from Port Harcourt to meet with security agencies and report certain developments in Rivers State that have deeply disturbed me,” he stated.
He further clarified that he resigned from his position as Head of Service on Monday due to the prevailing situation in the state.
“After my press interview, I saw a video of my wife trending online, where she was fed with falsehoods that I had been kidnapped. I want to make it clear that I am not kidnapped. I am here in Abuja of my own free will. The people who approached my wife made her believe a scripted narrative,” he added.
Dr. Nweke also pointed out that his wife is not privy to matters concerning his office, as they only discuss domestic and social affairs.
“I am safe and fine. By tomorrow morning, I will be reporting myself to the security agencies. Abuja is where all major security headquarters are located, and I believe it is the safest place for me to make this report,” he concluded.
The situation continues to unfold as political tensions rise in Rivers State.
