Cardinal John Onaiyekan, a former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has strongly criticized the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu.
John Onaiyekan accused the government of intentionally keeping people poor to control them and suppress their rights.
Speaking further, he noted that poverty is not what God wants for humanity. He believes Nigeria has enough resources to provide for its citizens, but corruption and poor leadership are causing widespread poverty.
โYou are sabotaging Godโs intention for humanity.”
He emphasized that poverty can’t be solved just by praying; it requires responsible and transparent leadership.
The Cardinal also questioned the sta
te of democracy in Nigeria, saying the ruling elite prioritize maintaining power over allowing citizens to freely elect their leaders. He warned that economic hardship is undermining democracy and civic engagement.
In essence, Cardinal Onaiyekan’s message is that a government that keeps its people poor through deliberate policies risks losing its moral and democratic direction.
