The Oyo State Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was launched into pandemonium moments after a fuel tanker explosion occurred on Tuesday, the 10th of June 2025.
The explosion reportedly triggered a massive fire, causing severe traffic congestion between the Oremeji and Olorunsogo areas.
The fire, which erupted near Sumurah, resulted in major disruptions as emergency services rushed to contain the blaze. As of press time, the fire was still burning, though no casualties had been reported.
The Oyo State Fire Service promptly responded, dispatching personnel and equipment to the scene.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Akinyemi Akinyinka, in a telephone interview with newsmen on Tuesday, confirmed the incident. In his words, he noted that there was a tanker explosion near Sumurah, between Olorunsogo and Oremeji.
His words:
โYes, a tanker is on fire near Sumurah, between Olorunsogo and Oremeji. Our response team is already at the scene.โ
Meanwhile, traffic authorities have diverted vehicles away from the affected stretch of the expressway as firefighting efforts continued into the evening.
