Twelve inmates were reported to have broken out from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, early this morning, 24th March 2025.
The methods the inmates employed in their prison break remain shrouded in secrecy, as it was reported that no architectural structure was tampered with.
Reports have also emerged that the correctional service centre had captured two out of the ten absconders that have earlier fled the premises.
Reacting to the prison break, Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner of Information, described the incident as โunfortunate.โ
โThe theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns. โThis calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system.”
Kingsley Fanwo has urged the general public to collaborate with the police to ensure a collective effort in bringing the escaped inmates back to the facility to serve their due term.
Additionally, he warned that anyone found harbouring these fugitives will bear the brunts of their actions.
“We call on the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate will be held accountable,โ he warned. โThere is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority.”
