A Nigerian boxer, Segun “Success” Olanrewaju, has reportedly passed out during a boxing match against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu in Ghana.
The boxing match which claimed Olanrewaju’s life took place on Saturday at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League, held at the Bukom Boxing Arena.
It was reported that Segun Olarewaju became unconscious during the fight, and all efforts to revive him were met with stiff resistance.
Olarewaju finally succumbed to his injuries, tragically bringing an end to his career as a boxer.
Reports gathered after his death revealed that the 40-year-old Olarewaju was leading with good points before giving up.
Prior to his tragic death, Olarewaju had won 13 out of a total of 24 professional fights, losing eight and striking a draw in three.
It is imperative to know that Olarewaju’s death has added another figure to the deaths of Nigerian boxers who died while fighting, including Imo State-born Chukwuemeka Igboanugo, London-based Nigerian Boxer Sherif Lawal, and Nigeria’s Asymin Mustapha popularly called “Young Ali.”
The number of deaths recorded so far is a pointer to the fact that the boxing career is laced with a lot of life-threatening disadvantages and risks.
