There is allegedly a blood bath currently ongoing in some communities of Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, as herdsmen have closed in on some communities, killing people and setting fire to houses in the area.
Daily Independent gathered on Friday that the armed herdsmen, who are numbering over 300, had commenced entering Ukum LGA in droves since the beginning of the week and were causing mayhem in Chito, Ukum LGA.
Although there has been an influx of herdsmen in the Sankara axis, comprising Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo LGAs, INDEPENDENT learned that the heat is presently on Ukum and Logo LGAs.
But unconfirmed sources said that over 80 locals in Ukum LGA had been killed by the herdsmen at about 3pm on Friday.
However, the State Commissioner for Information, Mathew Aboh, said that five people were killed on Thursday, while three others were presently receiving treatment in Zaki Biam, headquarters of Ukum LGA.
Efforts to get the police to comment on the attacks proved abortive as our Correspondent was not able to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Sewuese Anene.
However, Police sources disclosed that a combined team of soldiers, police, and NSCDC had been drafted to Ukum to salvage the situation and that the police would issue a statement at the end of the day.
Competent sources revealed to The People’s Insight that helicopters were seen hovering over the area. He also said military planes have also been bombarding the bandits. End.
