The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reportedly jettisoned the Thursday, May 1st holiday and taken to the streets to stage a pro-Fubara protest.
The protesters were reported to have assembled at the NLC state secretariat in Port Harcourt, with the members of the union marching in solidarity for the reinstatement of Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly who were suspended in March by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the prolonged political upheaval that rocked the state.
It was alleged that the Nigeria Labour Congress, prior to this moment, had made plans to shun the traditional celebration known to the president and misinform the public with claims of deepening concerns over federal intervention in the stateโs affairs.
Speaking to some newsmen, a representative of the union said:
โOur decision to boycott the May Day celebration is a clear message.”
โWe stand with the legitimate leadership of Rivers State and reject any attempt to destabilise our democracy.โ
The Pro-Fubara staged protest remarkably drew massive attention owing to the large crowds that stormed the NLC secretariat. Protesters were said to have turned out in mass with banners and chants expressing unwavering support for Fubara, while simultaneously drawing attention from both online and offline communities.
