Guaranty Trust Bank has broken its silence on the viral news that alleged it was the initiator of the arrest of popular social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
Releasing CCTV footage to justify its claims, the bank noted that the alleged arrest occurred outside the bank’s premises and not within the bank, as VeryDarkMan’s lawyer alleged yesterday.
Apparently, VeryDarkMan had visited the bank to lay complaints about the several debit alerts his mother’s account had received and had gone to the bank to have it sorted.
Feedback from VDM’s counsel, Deji Adeyanju, revealed that the activist was detained by the EFCC shortly after the bank locked the exit door for over five minutes to enable the EFCC to nab him and his friend.
The clip of the footage, however, did not show the actual arrest and its eventuality, perhaps because the bank’s security cameras did not extend to the particular area outside the bank.
The arrest has sparked differing opinions, with some seeing it as a bank-planned exoneration strategy and others believing it was prompted by those previously criticized by the activist.
