Just 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Benue State to address growing insecurity, marauding herdsmen launched a fresh attack on the Wannune community in Tarka Local Government Area.
Residents who narrated their ordeal on Friday evening said the assailants set homes and properties ablaze, forcing people to flee for their lives.
A youth corps member serving in the area described the situation as chaotic, saying people scrambled into the bushes to escape the violence.
“Everyone is fleeing into the bush. Please, Nigerians should pray for us. The herdsmen are wreaking havoc in the area,” the corps member pleaded in a distress message, urging state security agencies to act swiftly.
The incident casts doubt on the impact of President Tinubuโs recent visit and the efficacy of the directives issued to tackle insecurity in the state.
During his trip, President Tinubu met with key stakeholders and ordered the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to bring the perpetrators of recent killings to justice.
His visit came on the heels of a massacre in the Yelewata community in Guma Local Government Area, where about 200 people were reportedly killed.
That attack sparked national outrage and raised serious questions about the governmentโs capacity to safeguard its citizens.
