Victor Osimhen was moved to tears after Galatasaray fans displayed a banner tribute to his late mother on Tuesday night.
The large tifo banner was unfurled just before the club’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 first-leg encounter against Liverpool at the Turkish champions’ RAMS Park.
The banner depicts Osimhen, in a Galatasaray jersey, holding his younger self in what looks like the neighbourhood he grew up in, with the figure of his mother looking on with a smile.
A footnote banner that reads “we are family and family is everything” was earlier unveiled by the fans during warm-ups, and Osimhen posed for a picture with it.
“We are family and family is everything.”
An emotional Osimhen was pictured taking off his mask to wipe tears from his eyes in response to the fans’ tribute. He also approached the fans to thank them for the wonderful gesture.
Osimhen, the last of seven children, lost his mother at a young age but credited her for his resilience and warrior persona.
The 27-year-old has been Galatasaray’s leader in the UCL this season with seven crucial goals that took the Turkish champions to the round of 16.
He also provided an assist in the seventh minute of the first-leg encounter against Liverpool which they won 1-0.
