A student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) and model, identified as Ibrahim Pilasar Mbaya, has been tortured to death by fellow students who accused him of stealing an iPhone 16 after he spent the night at a friend’s off-campus residence in Ring Road area of Plateau State.
Reporters gathered that the tragic incident occurred on Sunday at an off-campus apartment located behind the City of David in the Ring Road area of Jos.
According to information obtained by SaharaReporters, Ibrahim had reportedly spent the night at his friend’s apartment. By morning, the friend allegedly accused him of stealing his iPhone 16, insisting that because they were the only two people in the room, Ibrahim was the prime suspect.
Instead of reporting the matter to the police or allowing law enforcement authorities to investigate the allegation, the students allegedly subjected Ibrahim to hours of brutal torture and degrading treatment.
A disturbing video obtained by SaharaReporters shows the deceased being subjected to various forms of torture by his fellow students.
In one of the scenes captured in the video, Ibrahim was tied up and suspended while being assaulted.
The students also filled a bucket with water and handed him a teaspoon, ordering him to transfer the water into another bowl with the tiny spoon after he had already been beaten into a state of severe weakness and near unconsciousness.
Sources said the young student was repeatedly beaten, humiliated, disgraced and subjected to inhumane treatment throughout the ordeal.
According to the sources, after the prolonged torture, Ibrahim was locked inside a room where those involved allegedly invited a nurse to examine him.
The nurse reportedly confirmed that he was already dead.
It was further gathered that those involved allegedly attempted to move his body to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) in what was described as an effort to make the incident appear like a medical emergency.
However, the police were reportedly alerted before the plan could be carried out.
Reacting to the incident, a concerned citizen identified as Prince Miaphen condemned the alleged killing and called for justice for the deceased.
In a statement, Miaphen said: “That this late student was beaten to death by his fellow students in a student environment over allegations of theft has given me serious headache and pains.
“More annoying is the fact that one of his female friends, a fellow model, suggested that my attention should be called upon when it was happening and another friend said they should wait for further investigation before informing me. Kai! Kai!! Kai!!!”
Providing further details, Miaphen said: “It was alleged that the young boy went and slept in a friend’s place and there was a case of a stolen iPhone which he was accused of stealing. UNIJOS, Bauchi Ring Road…
“This was a very friendly and jovial model.
“He was beaten to death yesterday by students in an off-campus apartment behind the City of David in Ring Road.
“IB passed the night in his friend’s place in Ring Road and the friend accused him of stealing his iPhone 16 in the morning.
“He said since they were the only two in the room, he’s the only suspect.
“They subjected this young model to brutal torture, humiliating, disgracing and dehumanising him.
“They later locked him up in a room and asked a nurse to check up on him. The nurse confirmed him dead and they attempted to take him to JUTH Emergency Unit to make the case look like an emergency when the police was called.
“The beastly treatment they subjected this boy to is better imagined.
“May Almighty God continue to expose perpetrators of dastardly acts like this. Amen/Ameen.”
The incident has sparked outrage among students, residents and social media users, with many demanding that the authorities conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that everyone involved in the alleged torture and death of Ibrahim Pilasar Mbaya is identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
As of the time of filing this report, the University of Jos management had not issued official statements on the incident.
When Reporters contacted the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, he initially answered the call but declined to comment. Subsequent attempts to reach him were unsuccessful, as he did not answer further calls.
